Representative ____ or Senator ____ I
am pro-choice about abortion and birth control and I urge you to do all in your
power to protect every woman's right to choose abortion, and birth control, and
safe sex regardless of her age, income, or the state in which she lives. I
trust women to make these decisions and I trust women to decide when to involve
others in her choices. I agree
with legislative proposals for contraceptive equity. These bills are designed
to make sure that health plans and insurance policies cover prescriptions for
birth control equally with other types of prescriptions. Women spend more time
and money on pregnancy prevention and pregnancy during their lifetimes than any
other health care. I urge you to
do all in your power to pass EPICC (Equity in Prescription Insurance and Contraceptive
Coverage Act, HR 2174). This equity policy should apply to federal employees,
and anyone whose insurance is provided by the federal government (such as women
in the military, women on Indian reservations, and women receiving social security
or AFDC-type support) as well as all women covered by private health plans. I
am totally opposed to Rep. Coburn's amendment and intentions to ban the Food and
Drug Administration from approving medications or devices that have the effect
of preventing implantation of a fertilized egg, regardless of
why the medication is being developed. Clearly, antiabortion forces are relentless
in their attempts to regulate women's private lives. For years we have known the
anti-choice movement was determined not only to end abortion but also to outlaw
birth control. Coburn's amendment proves they also want to prevent women from
using birth control. I urge you to do all in your power to resist Coburn-type
amendments on any legislation. I
urge you to oppose all forms of the so-called "Child Custody Protection Act"
more appropriately described as the "Teen Endangerment Act." This legislation
would be disastrous for young women whose health needs are urgent but the importance
of which is being denied by Congress. Hundreds of young women have stated they
would rather commit suicide than tell their parents about a pregnancy. Just because
some legislators think kids should talk with their parents doesn't mean the parents
are prepared for it. You cannot pass a law to force families to want to talk to
each other. This bill is not in the best interest of the health of minors. I
oppose efforts to restrict family planning under Title X by adding parental/consent
notice limits. I oppose all attempts to limit international family planning
funding based upon recipients' position on abortion. It
seems anti-choice legislators are proposing new bills each week to force Congress
to endlessly debate abortion. I encourage you to stand up and say, "no -
we will not debate women's health. Roe vs Wade is the law of the land. Women need
to be trusted to make abortion and birth control decisions. It is not government's
