I am 24. Is tubal ligation an option for someone as young as me?

Question:
I am a 24 year old who has never wanted to have children. Is tubal ligation an option for someone as young as me? Aside from the risks of the procedure, I don't see any reason why I shouldn't get one. I've always figured that there are so many children without parents already, that if I ever changed my mind, which, I doubt, then I could adopt.

Response:
You should have the right to sterilization, and doctors should trust your judgment about wanting to be a parent, regardless of your marital status, or your age (assuming you are over 18).

It really depends on your health insurance and your doctor. If you can convince them, you have a good chance. An excellent resource is Childfree Association.

If you live in a major metropolitan area, probably there is a doctor or clinic near you. If you live in a rural small town with limited practitioners, it may be more challenging and you may need to travel.
