New Book: Pride & JoyPublished in 1998, a new book called "Pride
and Joy: The Lives and Passions of Women Without Children" challenges
the still-pervasive social myth that a woman must have a child to be fulfilled.
Today in the U.S. one in five women in their early 40s has not had a child
either by choice or by chance. In
this book, a diverse group of 25 voluntarily childless women talk in vivid voices
about the contributions they make through their careers and to their communities,
causes, and families. They tell of the joy they derive from intimate relationships,
friendships, travels, volunteer activities, work, solitude, spirituality, and
connections with children. The
women in "Pride and Joy" are outstanding role models for living happy,
productive lives apart from motherhood. Their stories illuminate one of the aspects
of choice that is still taboo in our society. About
half of the women interviewed for this book, choose abortion to end a pregnancy
so they could remain childless. Written by Terri Casey of Seattle. Beyond Words
Publishing for $15. See also www.beyondword.com

are the words you do not yet have? What do you need to say? ...for it is not difference
which immobilizes us, but silence. And there are so many silences to be broken."
