Abortion Question:
Where can I get an abortion?
Question: Hi! I live in Pickering, Ontario, Canada and was wondering if you could help me find a place that performs abortions. I don't know if there is a law that says a minor has to have parental consent, could you tell me if it does? I don't know that I am pregnant yet, I am supposed to come on my period today, but I am worried. I need to find a place if I am. I would also like to know how much it costs, how long it takes and what the recovery time is (how long I will be in pain for)? Thank you so very much for your help.
Response:
Call the toll-free hotline to find an abortion provider in Canada, at 1-800-424-2280. [The US hotline is 1-800-772-9100.] A site that allows you to search for clinics in your state is here.
I am not sure about parental consent requirements in Canada. However in the United States it varies from state to state. NARAL publishes a description of each state's laws in their state by state report.
The cost of abortion varies across the country and around the world. It is covered under Canada's health plan in some provinces. It is covered by Medicaid in some states in the US. If you do not have insurance or another benefit to pay for the abortion, a first trimester procedure is between $300 - $600. Second trimester is between $500 - $5000.
First trimester abortion appointments usually last 4-5 hours, but the actual abortion procedure takes less than 5 minutes to complete. Second trimester abortion appointments usually require going to the clinic on 2 consecutive days and staying overnight near the clinic on the night in between. The appointments are a little bit longer, 4-6 hours, with the actual procedure taking fewer than 20 minutes.
The amount of pain really varies from woman to woman. Most clients feel fine walking around within an hour after the abortion procedure. See our aftercare instructions for more info. There are a range of anesthesia and sedation options for pain management.
